Full description
  • The houses densely packed on the hillsides visible from Busan Port are the stories of people who fled to Busan during the Korean War. They settled in the mountains and built their homes, climbing the 168 steps to and from the docks, the train station, and the International Market countless times in search of work.

Let's explore the storytelling path of the people who built their lives in Busan, even though they didn't know the local dialect. Start at the old Baekje Hospital and the Namsun Warehouse site, located across the street from Busan Station, which marks the beginning of the Choryang Ibaegu Road. The grand Baekje Hospital and the remnants of the Namsun Warehouse, with their red brick walls, are imbued with the passage of time. The bustling Choryang Traditional Market offers a lively atmosphere and delicious refreshments.

Continue on to Choryang Church, the first church built by foreign missionaries. It was a gathering place for those who opposed the pro-Japanese movement and the forced worship of Shinto shrines. The narrow alley along the wall of Choryang Elementary School is filled with the traces of time, reflecting the joys and hardships of the refugees who once lived there.

There was no water supply in the poor neighborhoods like the one on the hillside. The residents had to run down the 168 steps, fetch water from the well, and climb back up, a seemingly endless task. The remnants of the well and the monorail next to the stairs evoke a sense of the relentless passage of time.

Take a break at the Kim Min-bu Observatory, dedicated to the Busan-born genius poet, and then head to the Ibaegu Workshop. From here, you can see a panoramic view of the colorful daldongne in Busan and the beautiful view of Busan Port. It is a wonderful photo spot. The Ibaegu Workshop is a living museum that showcases the small-scale stories of Choryang Sanbok-ro. The houses on the rooftop village, nestled between the sky and the hills, each hold their own stories. It is a place that tells the stories of the people who lived there, with their rough and honest traces of life.
